Everyone handles stress differently. It can be easy to fall into bad habits like over drinking or eating and use stress as an excuse. There are many reasons why bad habits will make you feel worse, not better.
When you are feeling stressed, why not try to embed healthier ways of dealing with it this year. Try some of these simple techniques.
Exercise – get that body moving. Exercise not only increases energy levels, it releases endorphins which make you feel happier. It doesn’t need to be strenuous exercise, taking a walk can make you feel better.
Eat better – rather than inhaling a carton of ice cream or packets of salty chips, switch out for healthier treats.
Breathe – taking a few deep breaths or spending 5-10 meditating can do wonders for your heart rate and your anxiety levels.
Limit News stories – there is plenty of negative news at present and this might trigger your stress or anxiety. Limit time watching the news or on social media. Instead, try subscribing to an email like the Squiz which delivers the days headlines into your Inbox
Rock a bye baby – get some sleep! Not having at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night can have a big impact on stress levels. Limit your screen time before bed, listen to some calming music, avoid caffeine of alcohol before bed and create a daily routine to make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary.
Read a book – reading your favorite book can be a nice way to unwind. Even 10 minutes at lunch or before bed, is a great way to zone out of your own reality and into a fantasy world to escape.
Talk to others – reach out to friends or family to share your problems. Talking about how you are feeling well helps you deal with the issues and manage a way to feel better.
If you feel like you are struggling and need professional help, we recommend seeking professional counseling or medical advice.
